From the pages of history....... ( the 1st day of VT ------ 25 . 05 . 2009)
Our batch comprised of students from NIT JSR, JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY, IIT R.
We were asked to report at GT hostel for the confirmation. We received our welcome letter, the schedule for the program on the next day and the guidelines for both the final & mid-term review.
As always due to some problems I refrained myself from staying at the hostel.(first sin). The hostel was about 15 minutes ride from my home. It boasted of 24 hrs internet facility with all sites blocked. Though the hostel was well maintained in terms of cleanliness, had one of the best mess etc. I don’t know much as I stayed at hostel for a maximum of 2.5 hrs per day. (2 during lunch hrs and .5 during morning)
The very first day began with a ride towards MDC dimna. We were exuberant for our 1st day work.
(I wore the black shoe for the first time since last 3 yrs. It was actually very irritating for me.)
After the attendance in the bus itself, the journey to the venue began. It was raining heavily. The rain came as a respite for all of us. Till now Jamshedpur had been suffering from scorching hot and humid weather.
We boarded the bus from our hostel. It was the first instant when I had a glimpse of our batch. Then the bus went to the GT hostel 1 where 5 girls boarded the bus.(some anxious, cantankerous look followed ,cadaverous for me) I knew that out of 5, 2 were from our college & thought others to be from different institute. Through the attendance I came to know that 3 were from our college. The 2 others were from JADAVPUR & IIT R respectively. I thought of a girl to be from IITR but I came to know that even she was from our institute. At first instant they looked arrogant, bovine and certainly non ingenuous. I never ever had conversed with any of them either in my last 3 yrs at college.
N. B : FIRST IMPRESSION IS NOT ALWAYS THE LAST IMPRESSION.
I realized that it was not a condition of NIT J only. All others good institute suffer from the same deficiency in terms of Be....ti.....ll girls. ( Jokes apart???)
Though i have a chivalrous and lackadaisical attitude towards all stuff. I greatly respect all of them.(glz )
The journey towards the destiny began in the rainy weather. The scene was very familiar to few of us as we have already traversed that part of jsr a million times. The whole scenery was really very beautiful. The rain drops added another sort of charm to it. Though I realized it only a few moments (precisely 5 min) before reaching our destination as I was completing my dose of sleep in the bus.
Truly speaking for the first time in 3 yrs of summer break I woke up 6 ‘o’ clock. It was done to reach the GT hostel on time.
This was the first time I saw the MDC (though i have been to dimna many times before).
Wow Beautiful the very first word that I spoke on seeing it. I realized that a serene, picturesque, cool, calm place also existed in jsr. The eco friendly environment, site of dimna lake, which surrounded it was awesome.
We entered the MDC. We were asked to have snacks. We had our dose of snacks. This was the first time we got an introduction to our batch among ourselves. (Strictly speaking of boys). I don’t know about girls because I had not even had introduction with them in 3 years of college (except for one from our C section). I didn’t knew their names either. (I am afraid of Glz)
Some went outside to enjoy the cool environment. I don’t know what the heavy rain could have offered them.(as far as i remember all were girls) It was good enjoying sandwiches, biscuits, coffee inside the hall. The presence of the TV added a homely feeling . Few resorted to cartoon network just to have fun there.
After the snacks we were then had our first introductory session. Where we received a brief introduction by the HR team about Jsr, facilities like library & sports etc. (boar kar diya tha)
They told us about previous batch. One could not bear the scorching heat of Jsr & had even resorted to go back. Other was when they had to guide the girls from other institute to the mall in jsr. (the girls had brought all churidars with them.) what??????
As if they were going to be part of TATA Fashion LTD. & not of TATA STEEL LTD.
In my entire yrs at jsr i have not ever seen a single mall? Don’t know where did they created this hypothetical mall.
Then the introduction session began where each individual spoke about their hobby, name, etc. ( the same old stuff )
People spoke about writing blog, poetry, surfing net, painting, sports, singing, talking to different personalities etc. (personality bole to GF woh bhi always same via phone)(poetry ???? hey bhagwan!!!!!!)
(isse accha toh mera hai sleeping & dreaming -- wahan sab kucch ho jata hain-- even aishwarya rai se baat hui thi meri)
As far as I was concerned i didn’t had any and discovered my hobby on the spot like blogging, sports etc. TRULY – I was too lazy for sports & blog was something unimaginable to me.
(I was with MD. RAFI beside me. ( who coined the term RAFI for him ? , suddenly all the respect that RAFI sahib had gathered by his songs from me had been reduced to zero. ( ).If few such people sing in chorus the world would end even before 2012. I m sure that hostel-I & even I would not survive too long either.( As the so proclaimed by fans as MD.RAFI stays in front of my room. 204).
NIT JAMSHEDPUR WALON (BOYS N GLZS) PLEASE GUESS WHO THIS MD.RAFI is ????
After the introduction a lavish lunch was too eagerly waiting for us in the dining hall. We had our lunch like those of a bon vivant personality. I must say the food was one of the best that could be available in jsr. The only mismatch was with the ice-cream. (mango flavour). Yuck...... it cannot get worse than this.
After having our lunch & spending some time we were shown the documentary. Imagine seeing 2 documentaries one after another. (worst case scenario possible on earth- a horrendous experience).
The whole scenario got further exacerbated as I had already seen the 2 documentaries before. (LIFE OF JRD TATA & MAKING OF TATA STEEL). Further it was true copy from the book (Beyond the last blue mountain – R.M.LALA) that I had already read. However on seeing other enthusiastic batch mates anxiously watching the movies, even I tried the same. But not for long as I was busy dozing off in my seat. I cannot resist this daily dose of my sleep. This is my true hobby.
So again we were exploring the realms of the mesmerizing place after the documentaries. It was truly amazing and beautiful. I think that all other guys & girls would have also enjoyed it.
Finally the heyday came to an end. We were guided back again to introduce us to sports facility that was available at JRD COMPLEX & also to the archives gallery at CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE .
I had been to both the places a million times. (I visit JRD every day since my childhood during summer breaks. Its 5 min from my home) As always, it was truly fascinating to see the archives of the TATA STEEL. It would be a cherished moment to see the AVTAR SINGH VIRDI’S painting where a convex cylindrical steel piece had the painting displayed upon it when kept at the centre of the canvas painting vertically. Also the pages of glorious history of first industrial township of independent INDIA.
Finally after seeing both the places the bus dropped us again to the hostel. Finally the merry day came to an end. Though I knew that this was just a show off by the authorities. The real journey would begun a week after when we would be inside the company premises.
I went back to the room kept my shoes there and again moved on. My journey was still not complete as I had to go back home.
THIS WAS ABOUT FIRST DAY.............(to be continued when I get time)
Put in your comments with what u felt the first day was like.
Though I resent that I should have spent even more time with my batch mates. I should have participated in the group events. I was not a part of any group meetings during evening & weekends.(partying together, event at SNTI & visiting of Jubilee park etc..)
Though I maked some good friends like Priyesh,Paritosh, All my NIT mates (this time both BOYS N GLZ), Sonia. K ETC.... (esp . SHIV BABA - alas ..... ) (jo bhi coined the term paritosh for him mast rakha)
NB : I might have forgotten a few details ( I am writing this on last day of 2009 , we did our VT from 25th may, 2009) . Sorry if I hurt somebody. Take this on lighter note
3 cheers for our batch 2 group of VTs (hip hip hurray.................)
